The US manufacturer Source Global has launched a solar module technology that can produce drinking water from up to 10% humidity in the air. The company says that its optimized technology can produce water in different conditions.
The company, formerly known as Zero Mass Water, claims their new panel is “the world’s first renewable drinking water system” and can operate autonomously across the globe.
Commercial Hydropanel and R3 Residential Hydropanel, which have a lifespan of around 15 years, can operate with humidity as low as 10%.
While the exact details of the patented technology were not released, Source Global explained that the panel’s photovoltaic unit generates electricity for fans that remove water vapor from the air. The collected vapor is then converted into liquid water using the internal heat of the panel.
An independent system maintains water circulation and purity in the storage tank, followed by mineralization to achieve the ideal texture and taste.
Commercial panels are already in use in remote areas, indigenous communities, camps and arid deserts, such as Oman, where the company established its first “water farm”.
The residential panels, priced at $2,950 per unit including deposit, home hookups and warranty, are sold in pairs and can produce an average of 4 to 10 liters of clean water per day.
